incident at Campus Corner apartments on Nov. 10.

On Nov. 10, a Claflin University student was killed in an off-campus shooting incident at Campus Corner apartments on Chestnut Street in Orangeburg.

Dravious Terry, a senior at Claflin, died at the scene. His roommate, Andre Sanders, Jr., a fellow senior at Claflin, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case.

Claflin issued a lockdown alert at 10:58 a.m. The lockdown was lifted at 2:06 p.m. with notice of the suspect being in custody.

The incident has made security again a topic of discussion for some Claflin students. This is the second off-campus shooting incident involving Claflin student in two weeks.

Marcus Evans, a junior digital design major, was in class at the time of the Nov. 10 incident.

“The university’s response isn’t making anything better,” he said. “Prayer is good but there has to be something done because this is starting to occur too much.”

“In my opinion, Claflin needs more places closer to the campus with better security and monitoring for its students,” Evans said.

Cyntasia Wright, a sophomore marketing major at Claflin, was also in class at the time of the incident. She said the university’s response was really good.

Wright didn’t agree there was a lack of information from the school after the incident – and she isn’t sure if anything more can be done by the school to prevent such an incident.

Marcus Hamilton, a junior mass communications major, was on campus at the time of the shooting. He received the alert via text message.

“I thought Claflin was pretty fast on letting us know about what happened,” Hamilton said. He believes the school needs more security because no one knows what can happen.
